  General Notes:

" II Duncan Grant
Who appears as a witness to a charter granted on 24th October 1596 by John Cumming of Erneside and William Cumming, fiar of Erneside, to Archibald Grant in Balnathie (Ballintomb), and Isobel Cumming, his spouse, as son and apparent heir to the said Archibald."

from Chiefs of Grant 2

John married First WIFE. (First WIFE was born about 1530.)

  Marriage Notes:

No information has been found regarding the mother of John Cumming's sons. The date of the contract between John Cumming and Jane Douglas, 24 June 1579, suggests she was not their mother and that therefore John had been previously married. 1

John next married Jane DOUGLAS, daughter of James DOUGLAS 4th Earl of Morton, Regent of Scotland and Partner or Partners UNKNOWN, 24 June 1579(contract).1 (Jane DOUGLAS was born about 1533.)

  Marriage Notes:

"(referring to Scots Peerage volume 6, Douglas, Earl of Morton)

p. 364, after 1. 10, insert

' The Earl (James Douglas 4th of Morton) had also a natural daughter, Jane, married (contract 24 June 1579) to John Cumming of Earnside (Reg. of Deeds, xxi. 467).' "

from Scots Peerage (vol 9)

Note:

The date of the contract suggests that Jane Douglas was a second wife.
