The 5th Duke of Gordon died s. p. in 1836 and was succeeded by George, fourteenth Earl and ninth Marquess of Huntly, his fourth cousin once removed, he being the eldest son and heir of Charles, fourth Earl of Aboyne, whose great-great-grandfather was fourth but second surviving son of the second Marquess.
