Marriage Notes: "He (Alexander Gordon) married, first, 23 October 1767, at Ayton, and afterwards at his brother-in-law Mr. Fordyce's house in Argyll Square, Edinburgh, Jane, second daughter of Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, Bart. She was the beautiful, witty, eccentric, and daring Duchess of Gordon, the heroine of innumerable anecdotes. She was immensely popular in society, but her marriage with the Duke did not turn out happily. She lived for long in a small house in the Highlands, but was a good deal in Edinburgh society. She died in London 11 April 1812, aged sixtythree, and was buried at Kinrara, Inverness-shire, in a plot of ground on the banks of the Spey she herself had planted out. |
