AYRSHIRE MILITIA

"The Ayrshire Militia was a part-tome home defence force that was organised on a county basis and was not part of the regular British Army.

At the outbreak of war between Britain and France in 1793, the Ayrshire Militia was called to service to provide home defence forces against possible French invasion. The unit served in Britain and Ireland until 1815. All militia regiments were employed outside their home county, largely on anti-invasion duties in southern England.

The Ayrshire Militia was later renamed the Prince Regent's Royal Regiment of Ayr and Wigtown Militia. In 1881, it became associated with Ayrshire's regular infantry regiment, the Royal Scots Fusiliers, becoming the 4th (Militia) Battalion, The Royal Scots Fusiliers."
