The Scots Peerage, volumes 2, and 4 place Catherine Borthwick as the daughter of William, 5th Lord Borthwick. The age discrepancy between her and James Crichton would have been very great in this case. Given the degree of confusion about the different Lords Borthwick, she has been placed as his sister, rather than as his daughter. ^{1 2}
