  General Notes:

"Sir James Crichton of Frendraught, who got a charter from king Charles I. Jacobo Crichton de Frendraught militi, villae et terrarum de Monkshill pro principali, et terrarum de Lachintully et Tullieben in speciali, warrantum, &c. dated in 1633.

  Research Notes:

GENERATIONS

The peerage of Scotland places an additional generation between the James Crichto who married Janet Gordon and the Sir James Crichton who married Elizabeth Gordon, but gives no wife for this missing link. Bulloch in House of Gordon, volume 2, is clear that both father and son married Gordons, without an intervening generation. The dates allow this. Indeed it would not be easy to add another generation. This difficulty arises when identical names are found for more than one generation. The citing of legal charters etc, as quoted in The peerage of Scotland, has been re-applied to what seems to be the correct generation. 1 2

James married Elizabeth GORDON, daughter of John GORDON 13th Earl of Sutherland and Agnes ELPHINSTONE, in 1619.1 2 (Elizabeth GORDON was born about 1601.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Sir James Crichton married Elizabeth, daughter of John Gordon, 13th Earl of Sutherland. It was in their time the vendetta with Rothiemay broke out, resulting in the burning of Frendraught."
