"Patrick Scougal, born 1607, son of Sir John S. of Scougal, Haddingtonshire ; educated at Univ. of Edinburgh ; M.A. (1624); ord. to Dairsie in 1636 ; trans, to Leuchars March 1645 ; to Saltoun 29th Jan. 1659 ; app. to this See by Charles II. 25th Feb. and consecrated (at St Andrews) on Easter Monday 11th April 1664 ; Chancellor of King's College same year ; died of asthma, in the Chanonry, Old Aberdeen, 16th Feb. 1682. An Aberdeenshire tradition describes him as 'big eyed, grey haired, tall, and stooping, and of a very fearful aspect.' He made benefactions to St Machar's Cathedral, the library of King's College, and the Public Hospital of Old Aberdeen. He marr. (1) before 1654, Jean Wemyss : (2) 6th Jan. 1660, Anne Congalton (afterwards Lady Gunsgreen, died Dec. 1696), and had issue - John, Commissary and Provost of Old Aberdeen ; Henry, Professor of Divinity, King's College, born June 1650; James, Lord (Whitehill) of Session, died 23rd Dec. 1702; Katherine (marr. "Following his first wife's death, on 6 January 1660 he (Patrick Scougal) married Anne Congalton (d. 1696) .... Scougal died of asthma on 16 February 1682 in Aberdeen and was buried in his cathedral. His wife, who survived him by nearly fifteen years, subsequently remarried and became Lady Gunsgreen."
