Another name for James was ELPHINSTONE, James of Barnes, then of Quarrell.1 3 User ID: N750. James married Katherine GORDON, daughter of Sir James GORDON 4th of Lesmoir, 1st Baronet and Rebecca KEITH, on 28 December 1614.1 (Katherine GORDON was born about 1592.) Marriage Notes: "Katherine, the 'daughter of' James Gordon of Lesmoir, married Mr. James Elphinstone of Barnis (second son of Alexander, fourth Lord Elphinstone). By his marriage contract his father and his elder brother (fifth Lord Elphinstone) infefted him and his spouse in Balnaloith, Croftmorail and other lands in Kildrummy. In terms of a backbond, given on November 18, 1613, he restored these lands, which were granted only to further the marriage (Fraser's Lords Elphinstone of Elphinstone, i., 163). The dates would seem to indicate that she was a daughter of the first baronet of Lesmoir. By this marriage Elphinstone had a daughter." James next married Helen FORBES, daughter of John FORBES 6th of Brux and Elspet GORDON, on 9 July 1622.1 (Helen FORBES was born about 1582.) Marriage Notes: "Mr. James Elphinstone of Barnis, who appears to have held for a time the lands of Quarrel, in Stirlingshire. He married, first, Katharine Gordon, daughter to the laird of Lesmoir on 28th December 1614. Issue an only daughter Jean. He married, second, Helen, daughter to the laird of Brux, on 9th July 1622. He died before June 1628, leaving issue one son and two daughters." |
