The 1851 census for Leith, Midlothian recorded Archibald Clephane as head of the household living at Lamb's Court. With him lived his wife and three small children. Archibald had been born in South Leith and was recorded as 34 years of age. He worked as a journeyman gardener. 2


Archibald married Elizabeth PATERSON, daughter of John PATERSON and Elizabeth WINTER, on 29 August 1843 in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland.1 (Elizabeth PATERSON was born about 1820 in Leith South parish, Midlothian, Scotland 2 and was baptised on 28 October 1821 in Leith South parish, Midlothian, Scotland 1.)
