  Research Notes:

"OF GLENBUCKET"

It was reported that John Gordon, elder, of Glenbucket accepted the Colonelcy of the company of troops raised in and around Strathdon, Strathaven and Glenlivet to fight for Prince Charles Stuart, with John's eldest son John acting temporarily as Lieutenant - Colonel, and his grandson William as Captain.

As far is known, neither William Gordon, nor his father, John Gordon, younger, of Glenbucket, were ever actually lairds of Glenbucket. Even John Gordon, 'Old Glenbucket' was laird for only a small part of his long life, having sold the estate to finance the future rebellion. In the financial investigations after the rebellion of 1745 he was consistently referred to as John Gordon, late of Glenbucket, and the investigations dealt mainly with sorting out his creditors, the Duke of Gordon paying £20,000 to assist the regularisation of his finances. The Glenbucket designation used with regard to his family was no more than a courtesy, or a romantic claim on their part.

DATE OF DEATH

It is not yet known exactly when William Gordon died, but, according to the Moray Council Local Heritage website, his activity via the Aberdeen Journal witnesses that he was active until 1770 at least:

- advertisement of intention to build a a village to be called Tomintoul 09/05/1768

- advertisement for tradesmen for Tomintoul 26/03/1770

- apology for use of Duke of Gordon's name in advertisement about Tomintoul without his permission 09/04/1770

- advertisement for a man to keep a public house in Tomintoul and a tailor, weaver and shoemaker to settle there 21/05/1770

WILLIAM MURRAY

The minister referred to in William Gordon's 1725 baptism narrative, Mr William Murray, was probably the William Murray who was Episcopal Minister in Old Aberdeen and son of William Murray Minister of Inverurie parish.

The writer gives no sponsors for the baptism of William, and this. taken together with William Murray's status, suggests the writer is recording the baptism in the parish records, and that the child was baptised not in Old Machar Church but elsewhere, perhaps privately or in the local episcopal church or in another church. 6 7 10

William married Hellen REID.1 (Hellen REID was born about 1727,2 died on 3 February 1763 in St Bridget, Kirkmichael, Banffshire, Scotland 11 and was buried in 1763 in Kirkmichael parish, Banffshire, Scotland 12.)

from Epitaphs and Inscriptions

Note:

Two dates of death are offered for Hellen Reid. One is in the gravestone inscription listed above, and a second one in the Aberdeen Journal, published 21 February 1763, page 4 column 2, lists it as 2 February 1763. Od the two the inscription date is less likely to be accurate.

"2152- William (Gordon). 1745, Capt. 1746, May 7, at home (Rosebery's List, 1 08). Son of John, of Glenbucket, 2127; b. 1729 (see Note below); m. (i) Helen (1714-66) (see Note below), dau. of Sir John Reid, of Barra; m. (2) 1770, his cousin Christina (1740-1800), dau. of John Macdonell, of Glengarry, by Helen Gordon, dau. of John, 2110, and had with other issue John, whose son, Charles, was the last of the male line of the Gordons of Glenbucket.

2152- line 6, Charles Gordon was not the last of the male line of the Gordons of Glenbucket. The last direct male Gordon of Glenbucket was his first cousin, the Very Rev. Dean William Gordon, a Roman Catholic priest, who died at Greenock, 1880, Dec. 15. Charles Gordon, on the other hand, died at St. Bridget, Tomintoul, 1851, Sep. 12." (from Additions and Corrections)

from Gordons Under Arms

Note:

William Gordon was born in 1725, not 1729; his first wife's date of death is discussed in Note above.

William next married Christina MACDONALD, daughter of John MACDONALD of Glengarry and Helen GORDON, in 1770.2 (Christina MACDONALD was born in 1740 2 and died in 1800 2 13.)
