The 1881 census for Carnwath recorded John McConville living as head other household at 2 Lothian Street. As well as his wife Alice, he had living with him at that date three sons and two daughters. John, who was Irish born, was aged 36 and worked as a coal miner.

When his daughter Alice was born in 1883 in Carnwath, John was recorded as being a roadsman in a coal pit. He and his wife's marriage was recorded as having taken place in December 1863 at Carluke.

In the death certificate of his daughter Alice in 1964 John McConville [sic] was recorded as an egg merchant. He was deceased by then. 2

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The presiding priest was Mortimer Cassidy, RC Clergyman at Carluke, and the witnesses were Catherine Maclean and Matilda Kirk.

John McConvil, who made his X mark, was a pithead labourer and unmarried. He was recorded as 22 years and resident at Highwood, Carnwath. His father, Francis McConvil, a farm labourer, was deceased. His mother, Elizabeth O'Hare, was living.

Alice Hughes also made her X mark. She was a farm servant and unmarried. Her recorded age was 21 years and her place of residence was also Highwood, Carnwath. Her parents, Patrick Hughes, a farm labourer, and Agnes Kennedy were living.

The marriage was registered at Carluke on 26 November 1863, John Fraser being the signing registrar. 3
