In 1911 Francis, aged 33 years and born in Airdrie, and Margaret Cairney, aged 30 years and born in Shotts parish, were living with their six children in Salsburgh village in the parish of Shotts, Lanarkshire. The children were James, aged 10 years, Bernard, aged 8 years, Michael, aged 6 years, Isa, aged 5 years, Margaret, aged 4 years, and Francis, aged 3 years. All of the children had been born in Shatts parish, except for bernard and Isa who had been born in Prestonpans in East Lothian. Francis worked as a miner.

Francis was a coal miner, according to the death certificate of his wife, Margaret, in 1920. 3 4


Francis married Margaret McCONNACHIE (DNA Link), daughter of Michael McCONAGHEY in Greenhill, (DNA Link) and Margaret CRANEY in Cornakinnegar, on 18 April 1900 in RC Chapel, Cleland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Margaret McCONNACHIE (DNA Link) was born 26 March 1881 at 11.45 pm in Greenhill, Shotts Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 3 and died 19 March 1920 at 8.10 am in Learigg, Salsburgh, Shotts Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was cerebral embolism following childbirth over 5 days.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was Patrick Hackett and the witnesses were Henry Cairney and Margaret Queen.

Francis Cairnie was an unmarried man of 22 years of age, residing at Roundknowe in the parish of Shotts. He was a coal miner. His parents, James Cairnie, a coal miner, and Isabella McRorie, were living.

Margaret McConnaghie lived in Cleland. She was aged 18 years and single. No occupation was noted for her. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Cleland on 19 April 1900. 1

Francis next married Elizabeth McLAUGHLAN on 6 September 1924 in Municipal Buildings, Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland.2 (Elizabeth McLAUGHLAN was born about 1880 and died in 1950 in Stirling, Scotland 6.)

The marriage took place by Declaration in the peresence of Alexander Howie of 51 Main Street, St Ninian's, Stirling, and Margaret McLelland or Howie, of the same address.

Francis Cairnie was a widower and aged 47 years. He worked as a coal miner and lived at 37 Hill Terrace, Cowie. His father James Cairnie, a coal miner, was living. His mother Isabella McRorie was deceased.

Elizabeth McLaughlan was an outdoor worker and widowed. She was aged 34 years and lived at 37 Hill Terrace, Cowie. Both of her parents, Alexander McLaughlan, a mason, and Margaret Smith were deceased.

The marriage was registered at Stirling on 6 September 1924. 2
