The 1881 UK census for New Monkland, Lanarkshire, recorded Mary as aged 3 years. She had been born in Clarkston near Airdrie. At that time she was third oldest: her two older brothers were Francis aged 5 years and Edward aged 4 years.

The 1900 US Federal Census for Osceola Mills, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, recorded Frank Orourke and his seven children, five daughters and two sons, living in Elizabeth Street. Mary Orourke was the eldest of the children recorded. She had been born in March 1878 and was 22 years of age. She was a single woman. Her birthplace was Scotland. By occupation she was a servant. She had had no unemployment in the previous twelve months. She could read and write, and spoke English. ²
