An entry in the 1871 census for Cleland in the parish of Shotts recorded Owen Quin and his family: himself, his widowed mother, and three brothers of Owen. Owen was unmarried, aged 20, and worked as a coal miner. He had been born in Ireland, as did all of his family.

The 1891 census recorded Owen with his wife and family living at 4 Knowenoble near Cleland in the west district of Shotts. It noted that he was born in Ireland, was aged 41 and worked as a coal miner.

Mary Quin died in August 1893. Her father Owen Quin gave notice of her death before William Spence, registrar, at Cleland on 3 August 1893 and made his X mark.

Owen was a coal miner according to the marriage certificate of his daughter Catherine in 1897 and her death certificate in 1900.

When Owen died in 1908 his death certificate recorded him as aged 49, a coal miner, and the widower of Mary Jane Donnelly. Both of his own parents were dead by then. 1 2 4 5 6

  Research Notes:

AGE AT DEATH

Owen's death certificate recorded his age as 49 years. It seems likely from other sources that Owen was up to 10 years older than 49 years.

  Medical Notes:

John Lithgow MD certified the cause of death.

John Donnelly, Owen's son-in-law, of Ravenshall Cleland, was the informant. He gave notice of Owen's death before William McGill, registrar, at Cleland on 20 March 1908.

Owen married Mary Jane DONNELLY, daughter of Patrick DONNELLY and Catherine DONLY, on 13 June 1872 in RC Chapel, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Mary Jane DONNELLY was baptised on 24 November 1849 in Clonoe, County Tyrone, Ireland 7 and died in 1903 in Shotts parish (Western district), Lanarkshire, Scotland 5 8.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the rites and banns of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant was G. McBrearty, Catholic priest. The witnesses were Francis Doonin and Ellen McFadyen.

Owen Queen [sic] was a coal miner of 21 years of age. He was unmarried and resided at Omoa Square in Shotts parish. He made his X mark. His father, Terence Quin, was deceased and his mother, Isabella Cush was living.

Mary Jane Donnelly, who also made her X mark, was an unmarried houskeeper. She too resided in Omoa Square. She was aged 22.

The marriage was registered at Wishaw on June 18 1872, Thomas Steele being the recording registrar.

Note:

The two witnesses recorded above married each other in Cambusnethan parish on the 14 November of the same year.
