When Bernard was born in 1885, his father, Michael McConnochie, was the informant. He made his X mark before William Spence, registrar, at Cleland on 6 February 1885.

When the 1891 census for Shotts parish recorded his family living at 162 Omoa Square Cleland, Bernard McConnaghy was the youngest of his family, aged 6 years, living in the household of his mother's brother John Creaney. He was a scholar, and had been born in Shotts parish.

The 1901 census for the parish of Holytown in Lanarkshire recorded Henry McConnaghie, aged 25 years, and working as a coal miner, as head of a household living at Mason's Land, Holytown. The household consisted of himself, his wife, Mary, their baby daughter, Mary Ann, and one visitor and one boarder: Hannah Hart aged 10 years, sister of Henry's wife, Mary, born in Cleland, in Shotts parish, and 'a boarder, his brother, Bernard McConnaghie', aged 16 years, born in Greenhill Shotts and working as a coal miner.

When Bernard McConnachie died in 1968, his death certificate recorded him as 83 years old. He was also recorded as a retired coal miner, widower of Joan Cunningham. His parents were deceased. ^{3 4 5}
