In 1881 the census recorded James, his wife, his five sons -Robert (30 years), Gilbert (17 years), William (15 years), John (12 years) and Archibald (6 years) - and two daughters - Agnes (9 years) and Grace (4 years) - living at 60 Lethan Hill Dalmellington Ayrshire. James and his three eldest sons were ironstone miners. His ther sons and daughters were scholars. All the children except Robert had been born in Dalmellington. James himself had been born at Muirkirk, Ayrshire, and was recorded as aged 54 years.

In his son Robert's marriage certificate of 1883 James was described as 'oversman at pit'. 4


James married Agnes PARK, daughter of Robert PARK and Helen MUIR, in December 1851 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Agnes PARK was born on 29 November 1829 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland 1 4.)
