The 1881 census for St Cuthbert's parish Edinburgh recorded young John Bell living with his family, including his grandfather, and three lodgers, at 15 St Anthony Place. John was recorded as 9 years of age and had been born in Edinburgh. He was the third eldest of the children recorded in the family.

John Bell gave notice of the birth of his son, also John, before the registrar, John J. Wellford, at Edinburgh on 9 June 1904. This is the second child of this family to be given this name.

John married Rebecca NISBET, daughter of William NISBET and Sarah CURRAN OR CAIRNS, on 8 March 1904 in 78 Craiglea Drive, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Rebecca NISBET was born 29 August 1880 at 1.05 am in Cairnie Cottages, Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland and died 7 January 1964 at 9.00 pm in Queensberry House (Hospital), Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland.). The cause of her death was acute infective broncho pneumonia and arteriosclerotic parkinsonism.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the United Free Church of Scotland. The minister was Walter Brown. The witnesses were William Bell and Bella Nisbet.

John Bell of 362 Morningside Road Edinburgh was a cabman by occupation. He was 32 years of age and single. His father, William Bell, a cab proprietor, was alive. His mother, Agnes Lawrie, was deceased.

Rebecca Nisbet lived at 35 Cluny Gardens Edinburgh. She was 23 years old and unmarried, and worked as a domestic servant. Her mother was deceased.

The marriage was registered on 10 March 1904 in Edinburgh, John J. Wellford, the registrar.
