The 1901 census fpr Blantyre Lanarkshire recorded John Gallagher and his wife Mary Helen Gallagher living at 38 merrys Rows with their six children: John aged 19 years, Maryann aged 17 years, Jane aged 15 years, Martin aged 12 years, James aged 7 years, and William aged 2 years. John had been born in Campsie Stirlingshire and was recorded as 41 years of age. He worked as a coal miner.

John was a coal miner, according to the marriage certificate of his son, John, in 1911. ^{2 3}
