PIERRE DORION
Pierre Dorion was of French creole origin who lived on the western frontier and was an expert trapper and interpreter. He had lived among the Lakota people for more than 20 years. He worked with the explorers Lewis and Clark in negotiating with the native American peoples and helped them document ethnographic data about the Yankton Sioux culture.
He assisted in peacemaking among the tribes and was instrumental in transporting tribal chiefs to St Louis and Washington in diplomatic initiatives with Thomas Jefferson. In 1806 the U.S. war department commissioned him as as a subagent on the Missouri. He is reported to have died aged 70.
Another source gives the date of his death as 10 September 1810 and the place as Fort Osage Missouri Territory USA..
