  General Notes:

Helen was recorded by the 1861 census living with her mother and brother, James, in Henrietta Street Galston. She was a handsewer, aged 32 years, and had been born in Galston. The enumerator had, it seems mistakenly, entered Helen's surname as McCallum, the same as her mother's, but it seems likely that her mother was utilising the Scottish custom of a widow's reverting to her maiden surname after the death of her husband, and that the younger Helen would have been Helen Smith.

The 1881 census for Galston recorded Helen McCallum living with her widowed sister Annie Barbour at 40 Henrietta Street. Helen was recorded as aged 55 years and unmarried. Her birthplace was Galston. Like her sister she worked as a cotton winder. ¹
