   Another name for James was McCALLUM, James.

  General Notes:

James was recorded by the 1861 census living with his mother and sister, Helen, in Henrietta Street Galston. He was a coalminer aged 30 years and had been born in Galston.

The enumerator had, it seems mistakenly, entered James' surname as McCallum, the same as his mother's, but it seems likely that his mother was utilising the Scottish custom of a widow's reverting to her maiden surname after the death of her husband, and that James would have been James Smith.
