In the death certificate of his wife in 1863, John Carlin was recorded as being an iron miner.


John married Sarah CAVANAGH, daughter of Michael CAVANAGH and Mary CAMPBELL, on 27 November 1849 in St Patrick's RC Church, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Sarah CAVANAGH was born in 1828 and died 18 November 1863 at 12.00 pm in Barrhill, Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was premature birth and fever over 2 weeks.


  Marriage Notes:

The earlier date of the 5 November 1849 supplied by the IGI was probably the banns of marriage.

John Carlin and Sarah Cavanagh were married by Father Michael O'Keeffe. The witnesses were Robert Cavanagh and Mary Carlin. 1

John next married Helen ALLISON, daughter of Archibald ALLISON and Jane NETTLETON, on 17 January 1867 in Barrhill, Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. (Helen ALLISON was born on 4 March 1835 4 and was baptised on 8 March 1835 in Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, Scotland 4.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was Father John O'Dwyer CC. The witnesses were Michael McIver and Mary Drury, both of whom made their X mark.

John Carlin was a widower, aged 42 years, of Barrhill, Cumnock. He worked as a miner. Both of his parents were deceased.

Helen Alison, who made her X mark, was a widow aged 33 years, who worked as a housekeeper. She, too, was of Barrhill. Her mother was deceased.

The marriage was registered on 10 January 1867 at Cumnock, the registrar David Scott.
