  Research Notes:

DENNIS AND DANIEL

'Dennis' is regularly used as a form of Daniel in old Roman Catholic Latin baptismal records, although its true origins lie in the Greek name Dionysius.

This is possibly because the child being baptised was given the name of a 'saint' with whom he or she would be spiritually linked, someone who had already benefitted from the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as the child being baptised could be expected to.

Names from the New Testament and the subsequent history of the Church were therefore preferred.

St Denis, in English 'Dennis', a martyr and patron saint of France, provided a suitable equivalent to 'Daniel', a popular Irish given name. It was used to translate the Gaelic Donnchadh, also anglicised as Duncan.

'Denny' and 'Danny' may have equated the two names in this culture, although it is clear they are not the same name.

Daniel married Rose DONNELLY, daughter of Owen DONNELLY and Catherine McANALLAN, on 26 June 1863 in St John's RC Church, Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 (Rose DONNELLY was born in 1842 in County Armagh, Ireland and was baptised on 27 November 1842 in Armagh RC Parish, County Armagh, Ireland 5.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The couple were married by Father Thomas Keane RCC, and the witnesses were John Mallony and Ann Mallony, both of whom made their X mark.

Daniel was aged 22 years, was unmarried, and worked as a coal miner. He made his X mark. His address was given as Main Street, Barrhead.

Rose Ann also made her X mark, and also gave her address as Main Street Barrhead. She was a millworker and unmarried.

The registrar, Daniel Cherry, registered the marriage at Paisley on 29 June 1863. 1
