In 1881 the census recorded Patrick Thomas aged 39 years, a coal miner, living at 3 Allanton in the parish of Hamilton Lanarkshire with his wife and family. His birthplace was Ireland. His wife was recorded as 37 years old and born in Ireland. They had three children James, Margaret and Patrick, aged between 8 and 13 years, all born in Hamilton. In addition an older brother of Patrick, Conell, also lived with the family as did two other adult males, one a boarder and one a visitor.

Patrick and Catherine Thomas, with their two sons James and Patrick, were living at 16 McCreath Street Hamilton when the 1891 census recorded them. One male boarder also lived with the family. All of the males were coal miners.

By 1901 when the census recorded the family they were living in Bellshill at Viewpark Square 84. Only the younger son Patrick lived with his parents.
