A William J. Boyle was recorded in his grandfather's household at Nitshill by the 1861 census. He was aged 5 years and had been born in Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire. He was not at school.

The 1871 census for Nitshill, Renfrewshire, recorded William Boyle, grandson of James Lynch the head of the household, living in Store Row. He was 15 years old, had been born in Glenhead Dunbartonshire, and was a "coal mine worker".

William notified the registrar of his grandmother, Mary Lynch's death in 1878.

William Lynch was recorded by the 1881 census living with his mother Bridget and his sister Elizabeth in Dove's Cross Land, Nitshill. The entry recorded him as a single man aged 22 years who had been born in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire. He was a general labourer.

William Lynch, aged 30 years and born in Duntocher Dumbartonshire [sic], was recorded by the census of 1891 living at Cross land in Barrhead and Levern District of Abbey parish Renfrewshire. He was employed as a coal miner and was unmarried. ^{1 2 3 4}

FATHER

William's father may have been the "James Boyle Ship Engine Stoker" named in his mother's death certificate of 1909 as her deceased husband. It is unlikely his parents were married officially. ⁵
