  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Rothes in Morayshire recorded Margaret Gordon living at New Street, with James Gordon, Isabella Gordon and James Clark. Margaret was born in Rothes and was placed in the 45-49 years age bracket.

In 1851 Margaret Gordon was living with her brother James Gordon in New Street, Rothes, the town where she had been born. Living there, too, were her grandson, James Clark, and her niece, Isabella Gordon. Margaret's age was noted as 56 years.

Margaret Gordon was recorded by the 1861 census for 19 New Street in Rothes, where she was living with her brother, James, her niece, Isabella, and Isabella's two small children. She was 66 years old and had been born in Rothes. She was a domestic servant.

There was a Margaret Gorden recorded by the 1871 census for Rothes, Moray, living as head of a household at 21 New Street, with a family of boarders named Millar, Margaret's niece, Isabella, and her family. According to the census return she was 76 years old and had been born in Rothes. She was an annuitant.

When Margaret Clark died in 1878 her death certificate recorded her as 'widow of Joseph Clark agricultural labourer'. Her recorded age at death was 85 years. Both of her parents were deceased. 2 4 5 6 7

Robert Innes LRCP & LRCS certified the cause of death.

James Miller, entitled nephew in law of the deceased woman, and who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of Margaret's death before the registrar, John Garden, at Rothes on 28 December 1878. 2


Margaret married Joseph CLARK on 30 June 1816 in Rothes parish, Moray, Scotland.1 (Joseph CLARK was born about 1790.)
