The 1851 census for Edinburgh, Old Church, recorded Robert Prentice, aged 41 years, as head of the household living at Fountain Close, 28 High Street. In the household were Robert, his wife, and three of their children. Robert was a journeyman house painter by occupation and had been born in Edinburgh. ³

Robert married Ann JACK, daughter of George JACK and Elizabeth MELVIN, on 15 September 1830 in Saint Cuthbert's parish, Edinburgh, Scotland.¹ (Ann JACK was born about 1808 in Edinburgh, Scotland ^{2 3 4} and died 28 June 1872 at 9.30 pm in 26 Morton Street, Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland ².). The cause of her death was disease of the brain.
