  Research Notes:

FRANCIS

This is not a mis-spelling. The distinction according to gender between Francis and Frances is a modern one, as are many spelling conventions. Spelling in the 18th century was a more individually determined matter.

The spelling as given here is the exact spelling from the baptismal record. It is clear in the case of both mother and daughter that it is to females that the name refers.

EUPHAN AND FRANCIS

In both her daughter's and her own records these two christian names are used interchangeably. 1

Francis married Thomas MUAT Cordiner, Deacon-Convener of the Shoemakers Incorporation, son of Thomas MOWAT Cordiner (Shoemaker) and Agnes SYMPSON. (Thomas MUAT Cordiner, Deacon-Convener of the Shoemakers Incorporation was born on 28 December 1752 1 and was baptised on 31 December 1752 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.)

  Marriage Notes:
