  General Notes:

In 1901 when the census was taken Janet Cairns was living at 8 Forth View with her husband and six children whose ages ranged from 1 year to 15 years. Her age was recorded as 37 years and her birthplace as Newbattle in Midlothian.

Janet Cairns died in 1905. In her death certificate she was recorded as 'Janet Cairns married to Thomas Cairns pumpman in coal pit'. Her recorded age at death was 41 years. Both of her parents were dead. 3 5

D. P. Young LBCM [sic] certified the cause of death.

Thomas Cairns, widower, who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of Janet's death before the registrar, Alex. J. Neilson, at Musselburgh, on 20 February 1905. 5


Janet married Thomas CURRAN OR CAIRNS (DNA Link), son of Hugh CURRAN OR CAIRNS (DNA Linked) and Rebecca ADAMS (DNA Linked), on 31 December 1884 in Newbattle House, Newbattle, Midlothian, Scotland.1 (Thomas CURRAN OR CAIRNS (DNA Link) was born on 15 June 1862 in Crichton, Midlothian, Scotland 4 6 and died 17 May 1932 at 11.30 pm in Morrison's Haven, Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland 3 7.). The cause of his death was effects of cerebral haemorrhage over 21 days.5


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was performed according to the forms of the established Church of Scotland by the minister of Newbattle, Thomas Gordon. The witnesses were Rosina King and James Cairns.

Thomas Cairns was a bachelor aged 23 years of 101 Newtongrange, Newbattle. He was a hammerman by occupation.

Janet King worked as a millhand.. She was 21 years old and unmarried. She lived at the same address as Thomas Cairns.

The marriage was registered at Newbattle on 2 January 1885, Peter Stirling being the registrar. 1
