User ID: Y807. General Notes: "SIR ALEXANDER FRASER, eighth of Philorth. Born about 1537, succeeded his grandfather in 1569, and received sasine of the barony of Philorth by royal precept dated 23 March 1569-70. His grandfather had previously settled Pittalochy on him by charter 1 March 1561-62, and on his father's death in 1564 he succeeded to the estate of Pittulie. He built the town of Fraserburgh on the site of the newly created burgh of Faithly, which by grant of novodamus inserted into a charter of all his lands which he had resigned for reinfeftment, was erected into a free port and burgh of barony on 9 April 1588, and further, on 1 July 1592, Alexander Fraser got another charter of all his lands and privileges granted in 1588, with the addition of Inverallochy, and a grant of novodamus creating Faithly a burgh of regality with a free port, to be called the burgh and port of Fraser..... Alexander married Magdalen OGILVY, daughter of Sir Walter OGILVY of Dunlugas, Provost of Banff and Alison HOME, about 1559.1 (Magdalen OGILVY was born about 1536.) Marriage Notes: "Magdalen, married, circa 1559, to Alexander Fraser of Philorth, and had, with other issue, Alexander Fraser, ninth of Philorth." Alexander next married Elizabeth MAXWELL, daughter of John MAXWELL 4th Lord Herries of Terregles, jure uxoris and Agnes HERRIES suo jure Baroness Herries of Terregles, 31 May 1606(contract).2 (Elizabeth MAXWELL was born about 1549.) Marriage Notes: "He (Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar) married, secondly, in 1563, Elizabeth Maxwell, daughter of John, Lord Herries (she was married, secondly (contract 31 May 1606), as his second wife, to Sir Alexander Fraser, eighth of Philorth), and by her had issue" |
