In the 1891 death certificate of his first son, Henry, Henry McKeen was the informant and was recorded as a 'potato merchant'.

The 1891 census for Edinburgh recorded Henry McKeen as head of the household living at 5 Brown Street in the Newington district of Edinburgh. It was in fact the family home of his father in law and mother in law, who had recently died. Henry was a potato merchant by trade, and was recorded as 27 years of age. His birthplace was noted as Ballantrae, Ayrshire. As well as himself and his wife, Eleanor, there were six more residents in the household, namely his wife's brothers and sisters whose family home it was.

In the 1900 birth record of his son, William Nisbet McKeen, Henry Mckeen was recorded as a 'potato salesman'.

The census of 1901 recorded Henry McKeen as the head of the household living at 2 Braid Place, Newington, Edinburgh, a couple of miles only from where he and his wife had lived in 1891. His age was recorded as 31 years and his birthplace as Stranraer, Wigtownshire. He worked as a railway porter. The household, of which Henry was head, consisted of himself, his wife, Eleanor, their five children, and Eleanor's youngest brother, Richard.

Eleanor McKeen died in 1921 at the recorded age of 42 years. She was recorded in her death certificate as the widow of Henry McKeen, potato merchant. 2 3 4 5


Henry married Elleanor Tait NISBET (DNA Link), daughter of Alexander Sandilands NISBET (DNA Linked) and Isabella HAIMES (DNA Linked), on 7 June 1889 in 5 Brown Street, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Elleanor Tait NISBET (DNA Link) was born on 11 June 1869 in 1 Milne Square, Edinburgh, Scotland 6 and died 14 August 1921 at 4.30 pm in 265 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh, Scotland 3.). The cause of her death was carcinoma of the stomach.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The minister who married the couple was Charles McGregor. The witnesses were William Miller and Hellen Turnbull.

Henry McKeen was an unmarried man of 25 years of age. He was a potato merchant. His residence was noted as 5 Brown Street, Edinburgh.

Eleanor Nisbet was also unmarried and was 19 years of age. her residence was also 5 Brown Street Edinburgh. No occupation was noted for her.

The marriage was registered at Edinburgh on 17 June 1889, R. W. Charlton being the registrar. 1
