The 1881 and 1891 census record George as born in Shotts parish Lanarkshire, but in other censuses, for example the 1901 census, he is recorded as born in Bo'ness, West Lothian.

George Simpson was recorded as a coal miner in the birth certificate of his daughter, Marion, in 1877, and as a shale miner in the marriage certificate of his daughter, Margaret, in 1900. ^{2 3 4 5 6}
