  • Marriage (1): LESLIE, Jean 1 2

Patrick married Jean LESLIE, daughter of Sir William LESLIE 7th of Balquhain and Marjory KEITH.1 2 (Jean LESLIE was born about 1530.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Patrick Leith of Licklyhead, was, in 1598, served heir to William, his father, in fourth part of Auchleven and others ; and in 1605, in other parts of Auchleven, Ardoyne, Harlaw, &c., in the Regality of the Garioch. By his wife, Jean, second(see Note) daughter of William Leslie, seventh baron of Balquhain, he had four sons 1, Patrick, his heir, and 2, John of Edingarroch, who both died without male issue ; 3, Laurence Leith of Kirktown of Rayne, who continued the line ; and 4, Henry, unnoticed."

from Inverurie and the Earldom of the Garioch

"Jean (Leslie), married to Patrick Leith, younger of Edengarioch, Barns, and Likelyhead." (page 25)

"John Leslie of Balquhain granted by deed to his brother-in-law, Patrick Leith of Likelyhead and Edingarioch, the lands of Kirktoun of Rayne, 13th August 1561 ; and Patrick Leith got a charter of the same in favour of himself and his son, John, from the Archdeacon of Aberdeen." (pages 30 and 31)

Notes:

There is a chronological difficulty with this family.

a] William Leslie, 7th of Balquhain, supposedly the father of Jean Leslie, who was, according to the above source,
Historical Records of the Family of Leslie 1067-1869 volume three by Colonel Leslie of Balquhain (1869), his "second daughter", and "married to Patrick Leith, younger of Edengarioch, Barns, and Likelyhead", died in 1545. His first wife Elizabeth Ogilvy, supposedly the mother of Jean, died in 1518. If this were true then Jean must have been born by 1518, and if Jean had been her second daughter, Jean's birth would have been even earlier than 1518. If Elizabeth Ogilvy did not die as early as 1518, that would obviate some aspects of the difficulty.

b] Now, according to
Inverurie and the Earldom of the Garioch by John Davidson (1878), Patrick's father, William "died before 1598" when Patrick was served heir to him; Patrick was also served heir in other lands in 1605. Patrick's son. also Patrick. was served heir to his father in 1620, and this latter Patrick then died in 1629. These dates suggest, too, that Jean Leslie's husband, Patrick, was not born before 1518.

One possible solution is, as presented here, that the Jean Leslie who married Patrick Leith was the daughter of William Leslie of Balquhain's second wife, despite the fact that
Historical Records of the Family of Leslie states there is no record of any issue of William Leslie's second marriage. There may have been a second daughter of Elizabeth Ogilvy, Jean, who died at an early age, and it may be that the wife of Patrick Leith has been linked to her. It is hard, however, to see how, given other factual statements, Jean Leith née Leslie could have been born as early as before 1518. 1 2
