"Hay, Adam, of Asleid He was the son of Andrew hay, a merchant, who died in his infancy, and his wife Christian Cummine, Lady Asleid. Taken prison at Culloden. He said he was taken from his mother's house in Aberdeenshire in Sept 1745 by seven Highlanders, escaped in the night, and was taken again. On 28 July 1748 he received a pardon on condition of banishment for life."

from Jacobites of 1745

"Adam Hay of Asslid. Eldest son of Andrew Hay of Asleed, in the parishes of Monquhitter and New Deer. Adam was entered apprentice to James Hay, W.S., Edinburgh, in 1738, so that he was probably quite a youth when he joined the Jacobite movement. He was taken and convicted of treason. The forfeited estate was claimed and eventually purchased by James Hay, Clerk to the Signet, uncle and tutor to the rebel. The burdens on the estate were heavy, and included a provision to Anna Forbes, grandmother, and Christian Cumming, mother of the said Adam, besides certain claims by Anna and Jean Hays, his aunts."
