1881 census: aged 20 years; housepainter

John McGonigal, son of the deceased Elizabeth McGonigal and who had been present where she died, of 60 Clyde Street, gave notice of her death before James Stirling, registrar, at Glasgow, on 6 June 1890.

John and Elizabeth McGonigal were recorded by the 1891 census for Barony parish, Lanarkshire, living at 53 Clyde Street, Glasgow. With them lived their three sons, Henry aged 7 years, James aged 5 years and John aged 3 years, as well as Ann Gould, aged 22 years as a "boarder". John, aged 31 years and born in Ireland, was a house painter. his wife was aged 30 years and had been born in Glasgow.

In the 1901 census for Anderston district of Glasgow John and Elizabeth McGonigal continued to live at 53 Clyde Street and John McGonigal continued to work as a painter. They had a daughter Elizabeth aged 9 Years and a son Peter aged 8 months. There was also a general servant who boarded with them named Sarah McCall aged 21 years

John was the informant of his father's death in 1895. 4 7 8 9 10


John married Elizabeth Russell GOULD, daughter of James GOULD and Elisabeth RUSSELL, on 15 Jul 1881 in St Patrick's RC Church, Anderston, Glasgow.1 2 (Elizabeth Russell GOULD was born on 30 Jun 1861 in Central District, Glasgow, Scotland 11 12 and died on 7 Oct 1950 in Glasgow, Scotland 11 13.)


  Marriage Notes:

John lived at 63 Clyde Street before his marriage. The couple were married by Father James Conaghan before James McKinney and Minnie Davies, witnesses. 1 2

John next married Margaret McIVER, daughter of James McIVER and Margaret RUSSELL, after 1632.3 (Margaret McIVER was born before 1915 14.)


  Marriage Notes:

"His (David Brodie's) widow married, secondly, Alexander Dunbar of Westfield, Sheriff of Murray, while still a minor, and he died in 1646, leaving her again a widow. Brodie occasionally mentions his aged mother, who survived till about 1664."
