James married quite soon before his son David was born. He made his X mark in the register.

In his son David's birth certificate in 1856, James was recorded as a 'hammerman'. He made his X mark on the birth notice before George Sneddon, the registrar, on 5 August 1856 at Dalziel, 12 days after his son's birth.

James married Jane McCUTCHAN on 3 Mar 1856 in Dalziel, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^{1 2} (Jane McCUTCHAN was born about 1827.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was according to the tradition of the Church of Scotland. It took place in Motherwell in the parish of Dalziel. The couple were married by the minister, J. Louden. The witnesses were James Page and Thomas McKenzie.

James Quigley, aged 34 years, a 'hammerman', was marrying for the first time. The bride, Jane McCutchion was 29 years and worked as a cook at Jerviston House in the parish of Bothwell.
