In 1851 the census recorded Robert living in his parents' home at 28 South Coburg Street, Laurieston in the in parish of Govan. He was aged 24 years, unmarried, and worked as a cloth lapper. Robert's sister, Elizabeth, was also aged 24 years. ²

Robert married Margaret McADAM on 1 Feb 1852 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (Margaret McADAM was born about 1828 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.)
