In 1861 Hugh was recorded by the census as being 23 years old and working as a coal miner.

In 1862 when his father died, it was Hugh who notified the registrar. After being present where his father's death occurred, he gave notice of it to the registrar at Cambusnethan, Thomas B. Gibson, on 26 November 1862. ¹

Hugh had a relationship with Catherine McGOVERN. (Catherine McGOVERN was born about 1843 in Ireland ³ and died in 1882 in Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland ⁴.)
