When his birth was registered on 3 October 1855 at Holytown, his certificate records that baby John Rock's father was not present where the birth occurred. His father, John Rock, was the informant before the registrar, William Richard, at Holytown.

John married Thomas McGOVERN, son of Hugh McGOVERN and Bridget McINIFF, on 20 Jul 1762 in Insch Parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.^{1 2} (Thomas McGOVERN was born about 1833 in Ireland ³.)
