WEBSTER, Richard

  • Born: 22 Jul 1787, Stenton, East Lothian, Scotland
  • Marriage (1): HAY, Helen on 4 Jun 1813 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland
  • Marriage (2): HAY, Helen 1
  • Died: 21 October 1856 at 1.00 am, Ruchlaw West Mains, Stenton, East Lothian, Scotland

Cause of his death was 'supposed to be dropsy'.

  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Whittinghame, East Lothian recorded Richard Webster as head of the household living at Muircockhall. Included in the census entry were his wife, two of his children, and the daughter of another of his daughters. Richard was recorded as being 62 years of age. He worked as a shepherd, and had been born in Stenton Haddingtonshire (now East Lothian).

In his death certificate of 1856 Richard was recorded as a married man. No wife's name was given, however. His age was recorded as 67 and his occupation as shepherd. Both of his parents were deceased.

Richard was a ploughman, according to his daughter Helen's death certificate in 1883. 2

  Medical Notes:

Richard had no medical attendant.

William Webster, Richard's son, who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of his father's death before James Fraser, registrar at Stenton, on 23 October 1856.

Richard was buried in the parish churchyard of Stenton, as certified by John McPherson, undertaker.

Richard married Helen HAY, daughter of William HAY and Janet KNOX, on 4 Jun 1813 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. (Helen HAY was christened on 26 Mar 1786 in Innerwick, East Lothian, Scotland.)

  Marriage Notes:

Another date was recorded for this couple in the Old Parish records of the parish of Innerwick, East Lothian, that of May 14 1813. In this the bride's father was named as William Hay. This date was probably that of the banns of marriage rather than the marriage itself.

Richard next married Helen HAY, daughter of William HAY and Janet KNOX.1 (Helen HAY was christened on 26 Mar 1786 in Innerwick, East Lothian, Scotland.)
