  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Kilmarnock recorded Samuell (sic), aged 10 years, living at Back Street. He had been born in Ayrshire. The head of the household was John McCann, married (probably) to Catrean, (again probably) the mother of Samuel and a widow after the death of his father. There were five Quigley children ranging from age 9-15 years, and two McCann children aged 4 and 2 years.

The marriage record in 1850 recorded that Samuel was of Ayrshire, Scotland.

The index of the 1851 census for Irvine, Ayrshire recorded a Samuel Quigly aged 21 years living there. The census entry recorded him living at Bridgegate, Irvine, with his wife, Elizabeth, and his brother, William. He was a broker of old clothes.

In the birth certificate of his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1855, Samuel was described as a 'hawker and broker' and was recorded as aged "24 years and 10 months". He was born in Doura, in the parish of Kilwinning. The certificate recorded that he had one boy and two girls living, presumably including Elizabeth whose birth was being registered. It further noted that he and his wife were married on 3 February 1850 at Kilmarnock. 5

Noted events in his life were:

• sponsor at baptism, 10 Jul 1853, St Joseph's RC Chapel, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. 6

Samuel married Elizabeth DIGNAN on 3 Feb 1850 in St Joseph's RC Chapel, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. (Elizabeth DIGNAN was born 1830 Jul-Aug in Dumshambo, County Leitrim, Ireland.)
