  General Notes:

Susan Vallay was recorded as a collier's wife in the 1861 census for New Monkland. Aged 45 years and born in Ireland she lived at 26 Aitchison Street Airdrie with her husband and two small daughters.

In 1871 the census for New Monkland recorded Susan Vallely aged 50 years as head of the household at 2 Loudon Street, Airdrie. She was a pithead worker and had a daughter aged 12.

The 1881 census for Bothwell parish Lanarkshire recorded Susan Vallely as the housekeeper in the household at 115 Bothwell Park Rows where her son in law Patrick Mullen was the head of the household. Susan was recorded as 68 years of age and had been born in Ireland. 7 8 9 10


Susan married John McMILLAN, son of John McMILLAN and Flora McKENDRICK.1 2 (John McMILLAN was christened on 21 Feb 1815 in Killean and Kilchenzie Parish, Argyll, Scotland.)

"Lilias, married (contract dated April 1591) to John Grant of Freuchie, and had issue. Her will is dated 30 December 1643."

"He (John Grant 5th of Freuchie) married Lady Lilias Murray, second daughter of Sir John Murray of Tullibardine, knight, who, in 1606, was created Earl of Tullibardine, and his wife, Catherine Drummond, daughter of David, Lord Drummond. The Marriage Contract of Lilias Murray and the Laird of Freuchie is dated at Gask on 15th April, 1591, and King James the Sixth and his Queen are said to have honoured the marriage with their presence."

Susan next married James VALLELY, son of Terance VOLLOLY and Catherine HAMILTON, on 18 Jan 1856 in St Margaret's RC Chapel, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.3 4 (James VALLELY was born about 1815 in Ireland 9 11 and died 31 December 1867 at 2.30 pm in 24 Loudin Street, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland 12.). The cause of his death was 'morbus cordis' - heart disease sustained over 3 months.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest who married the couple was Father F. McCullow CC and the witnesses were Peter Short and Isabella Delangy.

James Volloly, who made his X mark, was a collier, aged 40 years, of Airdrie.

Susan Stars was also 40 years old. She worked as a servant. She made her X mark too. Susan's mother's maiden surname was left blank.

The marriage was registered on 21 January 1856, William Landless, registrar. 3
