The 1861 census for Shotts parish recorded Charles McKendry, a widower, an ironstone miner, aged 40 years and born in Ireland, living at No 1 house, along with his brother in law Charles Strain and some of the Strain family. ⁵

LAYDE

The birthplace of Charles McKendry was inscribed as Lead. This was very likely Layde, a scenic settlement on the north east Antrim coast, not far from the Giant's Causeway.

Charles married Catherine STAPLETON, daughter of Patrick STAPLETON and Mary BUTTLER, on 6 Aug 1855 in St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^{1 2} (Catherine STAPLETON was born on 3 Nov 1827 in Rhode, King's County, Ireland ¹ and died before 8 Feb 1864.)

The marriage was solemnised at Hamilton according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church.

Charles McKendry, resident at that time, and usually resident, at Cleland in the parish of Shotts, was a bachelor and worked as a coal miner. He was 30 years of age, having been born and registered on 7 August 1825 at lead (sic) in the county of Antrim, Ireland. Both of his parents were deceased.

Catherine Stapleton, who made her X mark, also resided at that time, and usually, at Cleland in the parish of Shotts. She had been born and registered on 3 November 1827 in the parish of Rhode (sic), King's County, Ireland, and her age was noted as 28 years. She was a farm servant and unmarried. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was solemnised by Michael Condon RC Clergyman at Hamilton.

The witnesses were John Wallely (sic) and Bridget Stapleton.

The marriage was registered on 9 August 1855, William Dickson being the registrar.

The records of St Mary's RC parish in Hamilton record this marriage between Charles McKendry and Catherine Stapleton 'both of Longbyres' by Father Michael Condon. The extract recorded that the couple were married in the presence of John Vallely and Bridget Stapleton. ^{1 2}

Charles next married Matilda GREEN, daughter of George GREEN in Dungannon and Eliza Jane MILLAR in Gortmerron.³ (Matilda GREEN was born on 3 Nov 1865 in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ireland ⁶.)

  Marriage Notes:

"The seventh laird, who died in 1655, married (contract 8 (12) May, 1624) Katherin, sister of Thomas Nicolson, advocate, Edinburgh, the ancestor of the Nicolsons of Glenbervie."

Touche, Thomas and John Gellane, all in Sonhonie, and Alexr. Gordoun of Abir- zeldie. The Pursuer, who had been evicted from the lands of Kinairnie by Elizabeth Seatoun, widow of Wm. Gordoun of Abirzeldic, now obtained decree against the tenants of the lands of Midmar and Sonhonie, which he held in warrandice, with 30/- each of expenses. Sasine following upon conveyance by Alexr. Gordoun of Abirzeldie and Katherine Nicolsone, his wife, dated 17 June, 1628."

Charles next married Elisabeth VALLELY, daughter of Francis VALLELY and Jane KIERNAN, on 8 Feb 1864 in St Margaret's RC Chapel, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.⁴ (Elisabeth VALLELY was born about 1826 in Ireland ⁸.)

  Marriage Notes:

Elisabeth was a widow of 37 years of age, of Graham Street Airdrie. She was a housekeeper. She made her X mark to sign.

Charles McHendry was a widower. He was 38 years at the time of this marriage, a coal miner, of Oman (sic) Iron Works in the parish of Shotts.He signed the register.

Fr Duncan McNab CC, of Airdrie, married the couple in a Roman Catholic celebration. The witnesses were Edward Murphy, who made his X mark, and Janet Wilson. The marriage was registered at Airdrie on 9 February 1864, William Whyte being the registrar. ⁴
