George was a little boy of 4 years when included in the 1871 census for Stow, Midlothian where he was born. He was living with his grandfather George Tait, beside the rest of his family in Edinburgh Road Killochyett.

The 1881 census recorded George Fairgrieve as aged 14 years and born in Stow. He worked as a wool piecer.
