  General Notes:

The 1841 census recorded Joan Tait aged 7 months living with her parents and sister at Killsclyitt in Stow Midlothian, the county where she had been born.

The 1871 census recorded Joan living with her husband and children in Edinburgh Road, Killochyett, Stow, Midlothian. She had been born in Stow and was aged 30 years.

The 1881 census for Stow Midlothian recorded a George and Joan Fairgrieve as father and mother of seven children aged 3 to 14 years whose surname was Fairgrieve. In addition, there lived there, at the Railway Gate House, New Edinburgh Road, George Tait whose relationship to the head of the household was recorded as father in law. George Fairgieve was recorded as 36 years old and born in Humby, East Lothian. He was a general Labourer. Joan was recorded as aged 40 years, wife of the head of the household, and born in Stow, Midlothian.


Joan married George FAIRGRIEVE, son of John FAIRGRIEVE and Jean REDPATH, on 19 Jun 1868 in Killochyett Church of Scotland, Stow, Midlothian, Scotland. (George FAIRGRIEVE was born in Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland and was christened 29 February 1845 in Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was performed after banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. The minister was David Waddell, Minister at Stow. The witnesses were Robert Fairgrieve and Joseph Tait.

George Fairgrieve was 23 years old and a bachelor. He worked as an agricultural labourer and was resident at Killochyett. His father was deceased.

Joan Tait was a domestic servant also resident at Killochyett. She was 27 years of age and unmarried.

The marriage was registered on 22 June 1868 at Stow, the registrar being John Walker.

Joan next married Margaret WALKER, daughter of George WALKER and Joan BRODIE.1 2 (Margaret WALKER was born on 13 Feb 1814 in Stow, Midlothian, Scotland and died before 19 Jun 1868.)


  Marriage Notes:

"He (John Stewart) is said to have married, first, Elizabeth Gordon, daughter of George, fourth Earl of Huntly .... "
