In the death certificate of his daughter, Margaret, in 1897, Charles McGonigill was recorded as a crofter.

Charles McGonigill's death certificate of 1903 recorded him as a Pauper, formerly a Crofter & Hawker, and widower of Janet Gunn. His usual residence was Smirral, Latheronwheel, Caithness. His recorded age at death was 82 years. His parents were deceased. ⁴

Hugh Sutherland, Governor of the Combination Poorhouse, gave notice of the death oc Charles before the registrar, Angus M. Gunn, on 15 October 1903 at Latheron. ³

Charles married Janet GUNN on 9 Feb 1844 in Latheron, Caithness, Scotland.¹ (Janet GUNN was born about 1820 and died between 1897 and 1903 ^{3 4}.)

Charles next married Robert Alexander McFARLAND, son of Uriah McFARLAND and Elizabeth CAIRNS.² (Robert Alexander McFARLAND was born on 6 Apr 1912 in Errigal Kieran district, County Tyrone, Ireland ⁵.)
