Jane Vallely was the youngest child in the Vallely household living and working in Shotts parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, according to the 1861 census. Her age was noted as 12 years and her birthplace as Ireland. She was a scholar.

Jane was a witness at her sister Mary's wedding in 1867.

In 1881 Jane Shevlin was living with her husband and five children at 43 Second Avenue, Inveresk Edinburghshire (Midlothian). Her birthplace was Ireland and her age recorded as 32 years. Her occupation was noted as 'stoneminer's wife'. ^{1 2}
