McKENRICK, John

  • Born: About 1700
  • Marriage (1): GLASS, Mary
  • Marriage (2): McKENRICK, Kristine 1
  • Marriage (3): Unknown 1 2

  General Notes:

John McKenrick is recorded as the father of Donald McKenrick, baptised at Campbeltown in 1732, and John McKenrick and Mary Glass are recorded as the parents of Kristine McKenrick at her baptism in 1728.

The records of the parish of Killean and Kilchenzie where the later McKendricks were baptised do not begin until 1762 for baptisms and 1783 for marriages. This couple did not necessarily reside in Campbeltown for the baptisms to be carried out there.

In Kristine's case the place where they are recorded as being based is Killquibnach. In John's case a gap is left for the mother's name, not uncommon, and 'there' is written for their place of residence, indicating the last mentioned place written. Here it's Killquibnach.

This place is probably Kilchaidnich, as written in 17th and 18th century maps of Kintyre or Cantyre. It is slightly north west of Campbeltown and south east of the Isle of Gigha. It is beside Kilnacroy, probably the modern Killocraw.

Kristine is called the lawful daughter of the couple, which tells us the minister was satisfied that the couple were safely married. It is possible since no mother's name was included in Kristine's baptism record, and since we do not have a marriage date for John that another woman was Kristine's mother.

John married Mary GLASS. (Mary GLASS was born about 1700.)

John next married Kristine McKENRICK, daughter of John McKENRICK and Mary GLASS.1 (Kristine McKENRICK was christened on 13 Oct 1728 in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Marjorie, who was married to Walter, High Steward of Scotland. She died 2 March 1215-16, leaving one son, who eventually became king as Robert II." (page 8)

"The Stewart's first wife, so far as recorded, was the Lady Marjorie Bruce, by whom he had an only child" (page 14)

from Scots Peerage (vol 1)

Note:
In page 8, 1215-1216 is a typological error for 1315-16.
