Joseph Charnley was a cowfeeder according to the marriage certificate of his daughter Esther in 1875.

In his daughter, Esther's death certificate of 1888, Joseph Charnley was recorded as being a journeyman joiner. He was deceased by then. ^{2 3}

Joseph married Paulina Wadsworth ASHTON in 1833 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. (Paulina Wadsworth ASHTON was born about 1805.)

Joseph next married Isabella McKENNA, daughter of William McKENNA and Isabella McCUTCHEON.¹ (Isabella McKENNA was born about 1824 in Ireland ⁴ and died 17 December 1893 at 8.30 pm in 17 Double Row, Thornwood, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was heart disease over 4 months.
