  General Notes:

Old Parish Register
Killean and Kilchenzie Parish Argyll

"1835 Births and Baptisms
Sibby daughter to Alexr McKendrick & Anne McMillan in Tayinloan born 20th Novr baptized 17th October"

1861 Census:
An 'Isabella McKendrick appears in an entry of the 1861 census living in Southend Argyll, working as a servant in the household of the United Presbyterian minister, John Lambie and his wife Agnes, in the United Presbyterian manse. Their dwelling had ten windowed rooms. The household also comprised the Lambies' two daughters, Jessie and Eliza, two boarders, a visitor and another servant. Isabella was recorded as aged 23 years and born in Killean. She was a dairymaid.
Note: This woman was baptised Sibby and then from her marriage on, as far as is known, was referred to as Sophia. Sibby however is a contraction of Sibella, which in turn is linked to Isabella. No others named 'Isabella McKendrick' have been found of roughly this age and born in Killean parish. The age, 23 years, is a little young for what we now know to have been Sibby's birth year, but generally speaking the margin of error is not at all uncommon at that time in that culture , and in her marriage certificate in particular of 1863 Sophia Henderson was recorded as 24 years old.

When Sophia Smith died in 1916, her recorded age at death was 76 years. She was married to Robert Smith coal miner. Both of her parents were dead. 7 11 12 13

  Medical Notes:

W. Noble MB certified the cause of death.

Michael Smith, Sophia's son, who was present where her death occurred, gave notice of her death before the registrar at Baillieston on 25 January 1916. 12

Sibby married Robert SMYTH, son of Michael SMYTH and Ann or Bridget SMYTH MS UNCERTAIN, on 25 Sep 1863 in RC Chapel, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Robert SMYTH was born about 1839 and died 8 November 1916 at 8.00 am in 3 Crosshill, Baillieston, Lanarkshire, Scotland 7.). The cause of his death was aortic regurgitation over 3 months.7

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was Father William Hallinan RCC Satcoats. The witnesses were James Donaldson, and John Rourk.

The bridegroom was an unmarried man of 24 years of age who was a miner by occupation. He lived in Stevenston.

The bride was unmarried and aged 24 years. She also lived in Stevenston.

Sibby next married James SMITH, son of George SMITH and Isabella McKENNA.2 (James SMITH was born on 16 Aug 1864 in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Scotland 14 and died after 22 Sep 1902.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Margaret (Lumsden) married - (1) William Johnstone of that ilk (Caskieben, now called Keith Hall), who was killed at Flodden"

from Families of Lumsden 2

Sibby next married Christian LAIDLAW, daughter of William LAIDLAW of Williamslee and Grisel SCOTT.2 3 (Christian LAIDLAW was born on 4 Aug 1754 in Innerleithen Parish, Peeblesshire, Scotland 15.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Margaret (Lumsden) married -

(1) William Johnstone of that ilk (Caskieben, now called Keith Hall), who was killed at Flodden;

and (2) Duncan (see Note below) Forbes of Corsindae.

Nisbet, in the Appendix to his Heraldry, says that Margaret Lumsden married Lundin of that ilk. It may, perhaps, be true; but in what order this much-married lady took her husbands I know not."

from Families of Lumsden

" ... the forsd. William Forbes of Corsendae married Margaret Lumsden, daughter to the Laird of Cullon, and relict of the Laird of Caskieben ... "

from Family of Forbes

Note:

Duncan Forbes of Corsindae was the father of William Forbes of Corsindae. Margaret Lumsden married the son, not the father. The mistake may have arisen from the fact that Margaret's stepfather was also named Duncan Forbes.

Note:

The Lundies of Balgonie are descended from the family of Lundin of that Ilk.

"Robert (Lundie) succeeded his brother Andrew to Balgonie, and obtained the Barony of Conland through his marriage to Margaret Lumisden, the heiress of Thomas Lumisden of Conland. Not much is known about Robert's life, but he was succeeded to Balgonie by his eldest son David after his death around 1581. The Barony of Conland was passed first to his second son, James; and next to his third son, Robert. Both these children died without issue and Conland was finally settled upon Robert and Margaret's fourth son, Andrew Lundie (4th of that name of Conland). Several generations later, the Lundies of Conland would become the representatives of Lundie of Balgonie.

They had several daughters of which included Agnes Lundie who married Sir William Graham of Claverhouse, and were the great-grandparents of John Graham, Viscount Dundee."
